Philip Morris faces tough road warns Goldman

Philip Morris International (PM -4.6%) slides after Goldman Sachs takes shares down to a Neutral rating from Conviction List-Buy

Lower tobacco volumes and higher investment outlays will be a tough mix for the company to overcome in 2014, warns the investment firm.

PM needs to lead Next Generation Products, or get into Marijauna; the "American" disease of terminal volume decline is now a global phenom.

I am always amazed, (not really, I am used to it by now), how an analyst at GS can open their mouth and create a wonderful buying opportunity for one of my core holdings as a DGI.

Honestly I welcome this sort of non-sense. Pm thanks to today's dip in price is now my largest holding. And tomorrow if it continues to slide it will become an even bigger holding. PM is a great buy and accumulate stock

I've been adding overweight to financials else I would likely buy more PM... I wonder if gs analyst was planning a short position. it is a tough for tobacco ... just like many other stocks.

I agree. This dip let me buy back my covered calls for 20 cents on the dollar. Any more of a drop and I'll be buying more stock.

Isn't anyone concerned about PM's debt?

I was about to get my big toe wet, and logged into Fidelity's research, and yanked my toe back out lest a lobster bite it.

The debt situation has been discussed ad nauseum in other articles and at this time not a reason to avoid the company.

PM has increased the dividend 100% and bought back close to 30% of its outstanding stock since the spinoff. I defy anyone to name another S&P 500 stock that has come close to achieving that.

Will the analyst at Goldman Sachs who lowered the rating on Philip Morris please do me a big favor and lower the rating even more? I have been waiting to buy more PM when it falls below 80. It is a little bit ironic that an analyst at Goldman Sachs has the power to move the price of PM stock, especially considering that PM has been a better investment than Goldman Sachs.

Agree. And while GS is at it, please lower the rating on MO. Thanks.

I don't understand why anyone really listens to analysts. Prior to the most recent recession, I don't recall any analyst sounding the warning bell. These people are no better than your local weatherman
