Don't sleep on General Mills

RBC Capital Markets initiates coverage on General Mills (GIS) with an Outperform rating on its view the company can maintain stable growth rates.

The upgrade cuts against the grain a little bit with other firms knocking the sales and margin trends at General Mills.

Related: Execs with General Mills did a good job laying out the company's volume and pricing strategy during their presentation at the Morgan Stanley Consumer Conference last week. Cereal market share is expected to rise next year. (webcast)

The stock is reasonably priced compared to other food staples and they are growing. The price should be stable and you get the dividend. So I think you will get at least 8% and maybe 10% for next year.

I agree, I've been looking to add this stock to my IRA as I consider it a great long term hold. Hopefully The Street is disappointed when they report Dec 18th (or the Taper drama), I've love to pick it up lower.

Been holding it since 42. Maybe should have let it go as it approached 53, when it was hyped up. If I was looking to buy more of it though, I would wait for it to get back down to at least the $49 mark though. it's a safe play though - earnings and dividends have grown at a rate in the high single digits for the past 30 years (even through recessions). On top of that, they've only missed 3 of their quarterly dividend payments in that time, and each has been equal to or greater than the previous one. Good defensive stock, and well priced relative to earnings, compared to POST (POST very overpriced, imo), PG, K.
