Ford could see halo effect from new Mustang

  • The age-old battle between the Ford (F) Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro takes a new twist tomorrow when the redesigned Mustang is unleashed in global markets.
  • By market share, Camaro has raced past Mustang, but the iconic car also has a "halo" effect which has helped the Ford brand.
  • What to watch: Though a "bit" player in the larger picture of global Ford sales, by entering a purely American car - instead of a watered-down European couple - Ford can make a strong design statement that could help sales of other models.

Ford badly needs to succeed with this, as they have little else going for it right

Going to an IRS is a positive step for now.

They also need to use the new platform to create a true Lincoln luxury car, since the demise of the LS in 2006.

Market is all about $45K cars now.

Current Lincolns are nothing but re-badged 4 cyl FWD cars.

    They need an ATS/CTS competitor.

Recalls, 27 & 28th out of 29 in recent quality surveys. No luxury cars in the $45K price class. No RWD luxury sedans. (even KIA and Hyundai make them) Eco-boost warranty/quality issues?

Even GM's new TT V-6 makes 60 more HP than Fords Eco-boost V6 of the same displacement

    Should I go on?

    Government Motors?

    One Ford?

When one can buy a new Merceded-Benz CLA for the price of a Ford Fusion, you have a big problem.

Good points! My experience working for Ford tells me that they better have a real Mustang this time or else the hallo effect will be short lived!

I do like what I have seen/heard so far.

Also rumored is a flat crank V-8 for a Shelby derivative making over 600HP

I flat crank V-8 for an American car, would be interesting indeed.

    Ummm 1980
Have you seen the figures and trends for Fusion and F-150 ?
    As well as China successes

Pretty strange to say they "have little else going for them right now"

They have focused on getting these core segments right across multiple platforms before addressing the $45K + market with Lincoln total reboot. F-150 gets total redesign in 2014 as well.

I do like what GM has done recently with cadillac though

See link for images of new Pony car
Went with the Aston martin type grill a la the Fusion
    Should be a home run

    http://bit.ly/INOEuU

BTW 1980 - the Fusion is a much better car than the MB CLA
MB at $55K and above are good cars in their class, but not at heart of market prices

Global Luxury brands make up only 20% of global sales, yet 60% of global profits.

One Ford x no luxury cars = Big problem.

Lincoln brand is so weak, they can't even use it in Europe.

    Hence the Badge engineered Vignale.

Badge engineering is not an answer. Investments in world class platforms is.

That's what got GM in trouble in the 1980's

What is wrong with some of you??? Ford is one of the great stories of the recession. No government help, made it on their own by creating fine cars, Stock up near double over the past year, an F-150 that outsells GM. Ram and Tundra combined. And I know why, I own one. The F-150 is a great American story. Ford haters should try one. Soon the Fusion will out sell the Camary. What more do you want? Oh, by the way Lincoln doubled their sales over November a year ago. Nuff said!

'No government help, made it on their own by creating fine cars'

    Really?

    http://onforb.es/POf2oi

Opinions don't matter. Price does. And Ford is underperforming it's peers

    http://bit.ly/1hs2LV5

Ford ranked nearly dead last in quality

    http://bit.ly/IOnYKC

Ask yourself, why did Mullally not fight the bailouts of GM & Chrysler?

Any normal CEO would have been dancing on the graves with the demise of it's competitors

Mullally was even shut down by the Obama administration for using "no bailout money" as a marketing & advertising tool for Ford.

Because it was simply not true.

Ignoring data is a sure way to lose money

    Lincoln? Now there's a joke.

Such a joke in fact they can't even sell those badge engineered Fords in Europe.

So they badge engineered a new one called Vignale.

Doubling sales from nearly nothing, is a very low hurdle.

The only world class sedan that Ford builds globally is the Falcon in Australia.

That is scheduled to be axed, BTW.

Doesn't matter, you could never buy one in the USA anyway.

New Mustang BAD design! The recess in the rear quarter panel starting from the door is GONE!

New Mustang is a BAD design. Reduced to almost eliminate recess in rear quarter panel which starts from door. The look of the recess inhanced the Mustang. I believe sales will not be what Ford will be happy with or their stockholders.

@1980xls You don't own a Ford and you probably drive a Kia. The main reason Ford is ranked low in initial quality in the voice activated Sync, and I blame that on the sales people at the dealerships. I had to show my Dad how to sync up his cell phone to it. Alan Mullaly an Mark Fields are great executives, and they have turned the company around.

Actually much of it has had to do with eco-boost, if you actually read any news.

You only wish Ford built a car as sophisticated as a Kia 900

    http://bit.ly/1hzFFMc

420hp 32v V-8 (longitudinally mounted) rear wheel drive with independent rear suspension. 8 spd automatic transmission.

Unlike Kia, M-B, Jaguar, BMW, Porsche, Lexus, Aston-Martin, Infinity, Cadillac, Chevrolet, & Chrysler and even Hyundai,

Ford does not make such a car.

In fact they are nearly the only major car company that does not. And the Aussie Falcon does not count, as Mulllally has axed that as well.

Nice Aston Martin inspired Mustang! EcoBoast should give it a big lift in overseas markets - should do well in China! I can see 200k easily!
