3M has more than just dividends and buybacks up its sleeves

3M (MMM +2.7%) delivered some juicy morsels to investors today in the form of new buybacks and a healthy boost in the company's dividend payout, but investing in growth is still very much part of the equation.

Execs presenting at an investor meeting today noted that the lower barriers to entry in many categories has the company investing more in R&D. The goal of 3M is to break through into new platforms and markets.

$MMM has increased dividends every year for the last decade at least, which is very encouraging. However, it could use more robust dividend growth, as it has averaged a relatively low 6.7% annual div-growth rate since 2003. This 35% raise is a fantastic start!

3M is a conservative company Philip - I know, I worked there in R&D for 30 years. Conservatism is good! They have increased their dividend not for 10 years but for the last 57 years! I think they still try to maintain their policy of 20-25% of annual sales be from products that did not exist 5 years earlier. It is always better to replace your own products than wait and let your competition do it for you!

Thanks Allan, I knew it was much longer than 10 years but the dividend site I use tracks only 10 years and I wasn't sure exactly how long they've been at it. 57 years is amazing!

I agree, a conservative business is largely a positive and like the company, great/practical products and solid management, can't go wrong, in my opinion.
