Chinese firms concerned about patent fees in Microsoft-Nokia deal

  • Huawei Technologies and ZTE Corp. (ZTCOF), which make Android and Windows phones, have reportedly asked China's Ministry of Commerce to make sure Microsoft's (MSFT) acquisition of Nokia's (NOK) mobile-handset unit won't lead to increased patent-licensing fees.
  • When the EU approved the deal earlier this month, it said it would monitor Nokia's licensing practices.

So. Chinese companies are worried that they are going to have to pay things they have stolen for now and have asked the government to help in the matter. Well it is tough to operate in an area which Nokia pretty much created.

If you're seriously asking this question, then you really have no idea how business works in china.

China's way (not necessarily the Chibese way) of doing business is less on innovation but control.

Nokia will enforce its IP regardless of the Microsoft deal. It's hard to see any point to such concerns, Nokia after all will be smaller after the deal so there cant be any antitrust issues.

What has Nokia's enforcement of its IP got to do with anything? It doesn't. What this does say is that maybe the Chinese companies are admitting they are complicit in the theft of Nokia's intellectual property in the past. The EU needs to step in to investigate this issue...the Chinese are notorious for IP theft, and in this case, it would seem they have admitted it.

It is strange that they are asking for stealing protection - where is morale? If it was other way around what then?

But probably it's a good sign for Nokia - if they are worried before anything has happened then possibility that something actually will happen - is not low:)

I think Nokia will cut a deal with the device makers as it will open up the export markets for them that will have no access to if they have not taken a license with Nokia...
