Univision beats out major broadcast networks

  • A thin week of new programming from the major networks gave Univision a chance to win the ratings war for the most recent week.
  • The Spanish-language network edged out ABC (DIS) and CBS (CBS) to pull off the rare feat of upending the majors.
  • What to watch: Univision is expected to have a banner ratings year in 2014 with World Cup coverage in the summer and its popular talks shows still adding viewers at a good clip. The year could also see the company go public in an IPO that media analysts think could draw heavy attention from P-E firms with big ideas.

Get used to this. Univision has a good chance to become the top broadcast network on a consistent basis over the next few years. A great way to play it is through Grupo Televisa shares (TV) which has a 35% interest in Univision.
