Court to expedite BP appeal over linking payment to oil spill

  • A court has agreed to fast-track an appeal from BP (BP) over the decision of U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier to reject the company's request to link compensation for the 2010 Gulf oil spill directly to the disaster.
  • BP argues that Barbier has ignored a higher-court ruling in making his decision, so the oil provider has asked the appeals court to step in.
  • BP has been battling with Barbier, lawyers for spill victims and settlement administrator Patrick Juneau for months over an interpretation of the agreement that allows payments for claimants without proof of causation.

  • You have to consider the American philosophy, why would I work to earn my own money when I can let the government take yours and hand it to me.

  • I guess I've been wrong all these years. I have always thought that an assignment of blame/responsibility must accompany a claim for injury. Apparently, his honor has a different view. Imagine if anyone could file a claim without proof of causation. We would all be in court, all the time. Hogwash, I say.

  • It's about time someone comes in to clean out this pit of fraudulent claims. Let's hope none of "Judge" Barbier's friends are on this court of appeals.
