Futures flat following a tough start to new year

Stock index futures are flat after yesterday's bumbling start to the new year. Europe brushes aside the afternoon action in the States and posts moderate gains at midday, but both Shanghai and Hong Kong closed with sizable losses.

The 10-year Treasury yield is higher by one basis point and gold adds a couple of dollars to yesterday's big opening.

It's the first Friday of the month, but it's come up a little too quickly for the BLS - the December employment report release won't come until January 10.
