Mulally staying at Ford, Microsoft -1.7% AH

  • Following months of reports, speculation, debate, and much else, Alan Mulally states he isn't leaving Ford (F) for Microsoft (MSFT), according to the AP.
  • Microsoft's shares, which have already sold off due to dimming expectations Mulally will be the company's next CEO, are declining some more AH. Ford, meanwhile, is up 1.2%.
  • Assuming Mulally is out of the running, the top candidates to succeed Steve Ballmer include server/cloud chief Satya Nadella (previous), ex-Nokia CEO Stephen Elop, and ex-Skype CEO Tony Bates.

  • Why not Paul Allen. He knows it better than anyone besides Billy Gates

  • Paul is a little busy running Vulcan Inc. and the Seahawks, and Trailblazers, and Sounders FC and Vulcan Capital....and....he doesn't want to come back to Microsoft.

  • Paul Allen? You mean the guy who drove Charter into bankruptcy?

  • Let's hope this gives us long in F a bounce back to where it was a month ago. Good news for F, and in the long run probably for MSFT as well. They need a tech visionary with a handle on what's unfolding in techville. Which is anyone's guess at this juncture, but more mobile seems to be the play.

  • Well at least this will end all the nonsense; maybe someday someone will explain to me why Mulally was the only good choice for the job...

  • Good news for F; bad for MSFT. There have been a number of remarks about Mulally's not being a tech visionary or IT guy. Let's not forget where this guy came from. Everything he does drives IT development - not to mention revenue and profitability. He's also MSFT's best telematics customer, having dropped Sync into most Ford models. Besides, Mulally has lots of expertise running and turning around big tech, aero, and auto companies - just the kind of guy you want as a CEO of a big tech firm, not some guy steeped in IT or knocking around in a research lab.

  • When Mulally first went to Ford (from Boeing), he was shunned by the car community. The insular car boys thought he didn't have a clue about cars. They learned different. He won their respect through action and results. Microsoft's attitude about his lack of tech may have put another nail into the coffin. The only potential negative I might attribute to Mulally is he MAY have been involved in the decision to outsource the Boeing Dreamliner. It's not clear to me if the dates work out.

Would you mind pointing to any source that suggests Microsoft board believes that - not some blogger, but Microsoft's board (you know, the people who are making the decision). Thanks in advance for the link!

  • No,

He outsources Ford engine blocks to J.L. French/Nemak instead.

  • That decision was made after he left by the bar room drunk Stonecipher who got himself fired for not following his own policy regarding dating or sleeping with fellow executives in the Boeing company. A typical McDonald Douglas manager.

  • Would be a choice but her requirement would be the magic mirror telling her who is the fairest of them all. Money 2nd consideration

  • let's see.....Ballmer staying again to the end of the year =lower stock price....oh yes to the end of 14 of course. Gotta have stable I mean leadership. I'll need tax losses for 14 anyway. The board....Oh yes. What will they say. Due to the lack of interest in the whole wide world and in order to retain the best and the brightest (corporate speak) Stevie has decided to stay. Is this possible ? You bet your sweet Bippy it is !!

  • Thankfully this F CEO mystery show is ending for the time being. Hopefully the F board wil soon designate a successor to Mulally to minimize uncertainity for 2015 and beyond.

  • Hopefully it's Tony Bates but I would vote for JLaw (Jennifer Lawrence) just so I could watch Microsoft's new advertising campaign for This is a Mac (Tim Cook), This is a PC (JLaw).

  • Just more confirmation of what anybody with a brain already knew. Mulally is staying at Ford through 2014, then he's retiring, maybe will keep a seat on the board. Hopefully the rumor mill will move on and $F can get back on track.
