Microsoft close to appointing new CEO

Microsoft (MSFT) is reportedly is close to naming a CEO to replace Steve Ballmer even though Ford boss Alan Mulally now appears to be out of the running.

Sources have told Reuters that Microsoft is down to a "handful" of candidates, including at least one outsider from the tech industry, ex-Nokia chief Stephen Elop, and insiders Satya Nadella and Tony Bates.

In December, Microsoft said it expects to name a CEO early this year.
