Salesforce rallies; strong growth reported for new app platform

  • Salesforce (CRM +3.5%) states the number of apps built and optimized for its Salesforce1 platform (fuses CRM app development services from Salesforce's Heroku, Force.com, and ExactTarget units) has doubled since the platform's November launch, and that 250+ partners have committed to developing apps for the Salesforce1 AppExchange site (offers apps meant to work with Salesforce's products). (PR)
  • The company adds the launch of Salesforce1, which brought with it hundreds of APIs and a strong focus on mobile optimization, led to a 96% increase in the platform's mobile app monthly active users, and a 46% increase in active users for custom mobile apps, in its first month of availability.
  • Salesforce1 is a key part of Salesforce's efforts to stay ahead of Microsoft, Amazon, and Google in a very competitive enterprise cloud app platform (PaaS) market.
  • Shares are now close to their all-time high of $58.37.

  • the most unbelievable part of this story is that with such surging and remarkably consistent revenue growth and deferred revenue growth that they can't even come close to being a profitable company. and they've been around since 1997. but boy have all the management team become filthy rich by playing this game.

here's my equivalent hype story that says no more and no less than their story:

Doyle3000 reports this morning that "Since November, the number of checks i've received from family members has doubled. And I now know over 250 people on my various social networks. And they all like me. I'm doing this to keep up with Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Ben Affleck, who are very competitive. They are also very rich with real earning power while I am complete hype, smoke and mirrors."

  • So long there's strong growth and the costs are managed so losses are controlled, I'm pleased with their trade off of profitability for growth. It's not for everyone.

  • Let me translate for those not knowing what this thing called Salesforce 1 is. In November 2013 they announced largest change in their platform - Salesforce 1. It means that now every application and customization you built in salesforce platform can be exposed to mobile device. If you consider salesforce has 1,7 million strong developer community it means they enabled all of them exposes their application to mobile device with special coding - that has been required prior salesforce 1. Magic behind is salesforce 1 app that is now preinstalled to many devices and that allow developer expose by just enabling it any application to mobile. And there is also important fact strong grow of API calls. This means that those applications are not just working with data from salesforce but Companies are using it to connectto many other systems. Key for salesforce success is to keep their developer community growing and retain current members and it is something they do extremely well. And as long there will be groweing number of Companies and Developers building apps on salesforce their revenue will grow. Thats why Innovation matters a lot.
