The main Asian stock indices are mostly down, although those in Europe are mainly higher ahead of policy meetings by the Bank of England and the European Central Bank.
Neither bank is expected to alter their interest rates, so the focus will be on any comments about future policy.
The Shanghai composite drops 0.8% amid the re-opening of the IPO market and following data that showed inflation remaining tame but PPI falling for the 22nd month in a row.
The Nikkei continues its see-saw start to the year, closing down 1.5% after a sharp rise yesterday following big declines earlier in the week.
