Ford to take on Toyota in Japan

  • Ford (F) is taking the game right to Toyota (TM) with the re-introduction of the Fiesta model in Japan to compete directly with models from local brands.
  • The automaker has struggled in Japan in the past and only sold 3.5K vehicles in the nation last year, but thinks the Fiesta can fill a role in the market.
  • What to watch: Ford and Toyota have been sparring over trade issues in Japan. The launch of the new Fiesta in the nation could ratchet up the rhetoric.

It's great to see that Ford has a world class small car that is viable in Japan. Should be interesting to see how difficult the government and Toyota make it for Ford to be viable.

"Taking the GAME to TM"... "3.7K sold last year".. You must be kidding yourself! The top seven Japanese automakers led by TM, HMC, Subaru, Nissan, Mazda, will all be laughing out loud.

Japan has serious long term economic, generational and workforce problems and the people there are very aware of it. I don't see many Japanese people ever buying a foreign car for both nationalist and image reasons.
