Total to join U.K.'s pursuit of shale boom, FT reports

Total (TOT) is set to become the first major oil company to explore for shale gas in the U.K., FT reports, in a major vote of confidence for government efforts to create a U.S.-style fracking boom on British soil.

Sources say TOT will announce on Monday a deal to join a shale gas exploration license in the Midlands currently operated by Ecorp of the U.S.

The size of TOT's investment is not known.
