Discovery ends talks to buy Scripps

Discovery Communications (DISCA) has reportedly ended negotiations to acquire Scripps Networks Interactive (SNI), with the family that controls the latter apparently not ready to sell.

The discussions hadn't got beyond the early stage and Discovery hadn't made a formal offer. The company will now return its focus to expanding overseas, including increasing its 20% stake in Eurosport.

A deal would have combined Discovery's stable of "lifestyle-driven" channels with Scripps' Food Network, HGTV and the Travel Channel, and could have given Discovery more leverage and bundling opportunities in talks with pay-TV providers.

Was always unlikely, as Scripps family has not shown much willingness in the past to part with control of the company, but it would have created one of the most compelling companies in media from a pure content perspective. I would have definitely owned it.
