Shell's exploration chief to take extended medical leave

Royal Dutch Shell's (RDS.A, RDS.B) chief of exploration and production is on an "extended medical leave" to recover from a medical procedure, the company said yesterday.

Andy Brown has been chief of Shell's upstream division, which is responsible for finding and producing oil and gas resources, since 2012; the unit is undertaking major development projects in places including Canada and Australia, with capital spending of more than $25B for the first nine months of 2013.

Martin Wetselaar, head of the Shell's natural gas group, will oversee upstream while Brown is away.
