Dow Jones: Wal-Mart laying off 2.3K Sam's Club employees

  • Dow Jones reports Wal-Mart (WMT) is laying off 2.3K Sam's Club employees, or 2% of the division's workforce. The cuts amount to a small fraction of Wal-Mart's company-wide workforce of 2.2M.
  • Sam's Club sales rose just 1.1% Y/Y in the October quarter. The business accounted for 12% of Wal-Mart's total revenue.

    Long WMT! But Sam's Clubs need to improve product assortment and get better buyers! Products overall need to appeal more in quality & price to working middle class or they will continue to lose members to Costco in many markets and continue with cost cutting measures to remain profitable.
