Keystone XL foes mount new challenge by linking it to Enbridge project

  • Opponents of the Keystone XL pipeline now want to block its construction by showing that two oil pipelines from Canada to the U.S. are worse than one.
  • The Sierra Club says in a new petition asking the State Department to revise its review that TransCanada's (TRP) Keystone and the proposed expansion of Enbridge’s (ENB) Alberta Clipper should be reviewed together to account for how the combination would contribute to climate change; if the rejection of one pipeline would lead to greater use of the other, then the projects should be considered together, the group says.
  • The Alberta Clipper expansion is a different project from Keystone, ENB says, involving increasing the horsepower on an existing pipeline within an established right of way, with no new pipeline construction or ground disturbance.

It is not the State Department's job to regulate the carbon emissions of projects in a foreign country.

Only a blind person cannot see that this anti-Canadian effort has nothing whatever to do with climate and environment. The Canadian oil industry produces exactly the same amount of oil and exactly the same amount of pollution with or without a pipeline.

these tree huggers stop progress, and we do need crude independence from friendly countries and not from the 12 towel heads of OPEC.

The pipeline should be built. If the oil doesn't travel by pipeline, it will continue to travel by rail. What's potentially worse for the environment? Rail cars that can derail or a stationary pipeline? Get real environmentalists!

I don't know why the unions don't begin raising cane about this idiotic move by our Obama tree huggers. I suppose the unions might be afraid they will lose a friend in the White House.

All of you fail to grasp the real story here. Did you notice not one word of complaint has ever been spoken against the large imports of Saudi and Venezuelan crude into North America? On this point: SILENCE!! Did you also note that on July 14, 2010, Warren Buffett, Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway (Owner of the Burlington Northern R.R.) met with President Obama at the White House. This conversation purpose was never publicly reported or explained. Subject: Block Keystone XL, by whatever means possible, mostly Sierra Club and Environmental Movers/shakers; in return Buffett's unwavering public support for the re-election of Obama; no doubt funds flowed as well! Who benefits when Keystone XL is blocked? Burlington Northern R.R. with 6,000 rail cars full of Canadian and Bakken crude rumbling regularly south, up to 1 million bbls of crude a day. Who else benefits? CN and CP Railroads, (USA Controlled), also Venezuelan and Saudi crude suppliers into the USA. How do they join the party? They fund the Environmental movement; just ask David Suzuki and his cohort. They've already admitted, publicly, their funding sources include substantial amounts from these "friends" of the USA. Get the picture? These tree huggers aren't nuts; they're a crafty bunch of toadies to their paymasters! Follow the money and the truth always comes out.
