SodaStream cracks $40 level on PepsiCo buzz

SodaStream (SODA +3.9%) breaches the $40 level for the first time in a month as speculation over a bid by PepsiCo for the company outweighs concerns that a KO-GMCR partnership will cut into sales.

Taking PepsiCo out of the equation, some investors looking at the longer-term picture such as SA contributor Matthew Levy think the home soda market can support two large players.

I guess we just have to tell the story after the closing bell. SODA instead dropped 2% today. Pepsi buzz is going away quickly. Nothing can change the fact that SODA is based on an old idea with little innovation. The new entrant, GMCR, may make SODA's machines obsolete. There is no way that Pepsi will feel comfortable enough to use SODA's machines to compete with Coke.

I don't understand your logic here. The fact that SODA has made the refill distribution work and partnered with brand name flavor providers is what's new. They seem to have achieved critical mass. Also, if you look at who buys what, Europeans want more flavored water than sugared pop.
How are GMCR's machines more "innovative"?
