Yahoo to add Yelp listings, reviews to search results

  • Yahoo (YHOO) has signed a deal to incorporate Yelp's (YELP) listings and reviews of local businesses into Yahoo's search results, the WSJ reports.
  • Yahoo intends to make the feature available in the coming weeks as it looks to differentiate itself from Bing, which is operated by Yahoo search partner Microsoft, and better compete with Google. Yelp already has similar relationships with Apple and Microsoft.
  • The WSJ article follows a report that Yahoo is working on search tech that could displace Microsoft.

  • Another good move. Hopefully, eventually Yahoo! can escape from the prison that is Bing.

  • How is Bing a prison? If not for Bing, Google would own 98% of search. It may be arguably inferior on its own, but it has gained traction. Combined Bing and Yahoo in the U.S. accounted for almost 30%, with Google taking about 67%. Erase Bing and you have a search monopoly, which according to your bias is clearly the best thing for consumers. Whether Yahoo has the resources to go after search is another matter, but given how much MSFT has poured into Bing to create a competitive engine, I doubt YHOO has a choice at this point.

  • Try Bing in any other country (non-English speaking). It is not living up to its promises and I do try using it as often as possible, not liking the quasi-communist monopoly of Google over search and maps either.

  • "Quasi-communist monopoly" seems like a rather self-contradictory expression, no? In any case, if the Communists had been as good at running countries as Google is at search and maps they would not have been consigned to the dustbin of history.

  • The way I remember the communist East is that we had a monopoly for everything. Sometimes, a staged duopoly to fake competition. Now, we sadly have the Google monopoly with a bit o' Bing/Yahoo/Yandex/Baidu thrown in for competition.

  • Yelp? Really? Who trusts Yelp at this point?

  • It is not about trust. It is about getting relevant opinions which no search of the web can ever provide on its own merit.

  • Never had a problem with Yelp. Found several restaurants that the Yelp reviews were spot on.

  • If Yelp can figure out a better way to authenticate reviews (real buyers ONLY) ,the sky is the limit! Positive move for yahoo.

  • If Yahoo intends to displace Microsoft....... then Microsoft should think of a hostile takeover.
