House OKs suspension of debt limit for a year

Feb. 12, 2014 2:38 AM ETBy: Yigal Grayeff, SA News Editor4 Comments
  • The House has authorized a one-year extension to the government's borrowing authority - until March 16, 2015 - without any conditions by a vote of 221-201.
  • There had been plans to link the debt-cap vote to restoring cuts to military pensions, but the Republican leadership dropped its demands in order to keep the political focus on Obamacare. Instead, the proposal was added onto a measure renaming an air traffic control center in Nashua in New Hampshire, of all things.
  • The measure now needs to be approved in the Senate, which has until the end of the month before the government runs out of money.
