Sony tops its global forecast with PS4 sales

Sony (SNE) reports global sales of more than 5.3M PlayStation 4 game consoles for a period ending February 8.

The tally easily beats its earlier forecast of 5M which included a period running through the end of March.

Sales in Japan start later this week.

As I outlined in earlier blogs and comments I see the PS4 as the clear winner in this console generation. This should help SNE a lot in the game division.

PS: Also, Japan sales only start this month. MSFT is not selling X1 in Japan yet and Wii U sales have been weak. I expect huge sales for Sony in this region.

Keep in mind that Sony previously announced that they will not be making any money off of their PS4 console sales. They will make money off of downloads incurred following purchase.

Yeah, and the more consoles they sell the more money they will make with licenses from games. It is true though that the high sales numbers right now will probably leave a dent in Sony's balance sheet. But the situation is much, much better than with PS3, where Sony also managed to gain money after a while.

I have seen many stores where there is a lot of Xbox One on stock but not a single PS4 which indicates to me that people won't even buy the Xbox One when they have no alternative which is a very strong indication for PS4 sales once their production shortage is gone. People are even willing to pay 550 € on Amazon for a PS4 that is ready for delivery where a Xbox One sells for less than 500 € even though it's offical price should be 100€ higher than that of the PS4.

Since Sony is more dependent on the console sector than Microsoft there's is also a much higher chance for this success to leave a positive impact on Sonys share price.

So does SNE have reason to dip again below 15?
