Canadian carriers spend $4.78B on spectrum

Canada's mobile carriers collectively spent C$5.27B ($4.78B) in an anticipated spectrum auction covering the rural/building-friendly 700MHz. band (particularly valuable in a country with low population density).

Big-3 carriers Rogers (RCI), BCE, and Telus (TU) each made purchases that grew their national footprints, and media giant Quebecor's Videotron unit extended its coverage to include parts of Ontario, British Columbia, and Alberta.

The spectrum will begin to be used to offer services by April.

Canada might be low in population density but 80% of the population now resides in cities.
