Under Armour skates past Sochi controversy

  • Under Armour (UA +1.7%) will design speedskating suits for the U.S. team at the next two Winter Olympics despite being blamed in Sochi for a poor performance by the U.S. athletes.
  • CEO Kevin Plank has been vocal in defending the company, noting UA-adorned athletes have won ten medals.
  • Financial terms of Under Armour's deal with the U.S. Olympic organization weren't disclosed.

  • I defended (UA) as soon as it was mentioned that speed-skaters were blaming UA suits.

I will be happy to take a coupon from Mr. Plank for my defense :)

  • This 'story' created a nice buy opportunity as it was totally irrelevant to $UA's long-term growth trajectory and quite frankly a bit of an embarrassment for Team USA's speed skating team . . .

Plank is one of the best CEO's out there right now and always steps up to defend the company he created and is passionate about. Doubling down on Team USA is a great move! Long $UA since 2009!

  • How long had they practiced in the suits in question? Sounded like sourer grapes in the first place. Plank and Company are the good guys...glad they weren't punished.

  • If you would actually do some research you would find out that the suits were shipped directly to the Olympics. The suits were only wind tunnel tested, and the athletes did not have a chance to practice in them before coming to Sochi. This is because UA wanted to have their debut at Sochi. BTW I am Long UA since 09 also...
