BlackBerry unveils BBM for Windows, Nokia X phones

BlackBerry (BBRY) plans to make its BBM messaging service available on Microsoft's Windows Phone and Nokia's newly unveiled X phones.

BlackBerry will launch BBM on Windows phones in the summer, with users being able to download it for free; the service will be available on the Nokia X as soon as the platform is launched.

Since BBM became available for iPhones and Android late last year, the number of active users has topped 80M.

BlackBerry announced the new BBM availability at the Mobile World Congress. (PR)

Separately, BlackBerry will reportedly restore its popular function keys, including a trackpad, that it had abandoned in new models that were launched last year.

Shares are +3.5%.

Ford tried MS OS before moving to BB10 Lite (QNX). The reason is that QNX is designed for exactly this type of application (high reliability, multitasking, rebootable portions of memory etc) which is required for vehicular operation, navigation, internet access and voice command.

It is far more important that Ford tried 'the alternative' before moving to QNX. The only two operating systems designed for mobile computing from the ground up are BB10 and W8. And it is not like Ford didn't give W8 a good run. At least 9 months, right?

How many other will be willing to spend millions to find out what works reliably?

The 'popular function keys' are the Back, and All Back' keys. The BB9900 touchpad was a much-desired feature and saves a lot of hassle - the type of hassle that causes people not to want soft keyboards.

Will we then see a '30 size device with 9900 keys and pad? Retain the HDMI and removable battery and we will have another winner. The Z30 is holding the top spot for satisfaction and recommendations. I tried it but I am holding out for keys.
