Oil companies confused by U.S. government order for shipping oil by rail

Yesterday's U.S. government emergency order requiring tests of crude oil on trains prompts confusion as refiners and producers try to understand what the new requirements will mean to their operations and how broadly they will apply to shipments.

"What do you want us to test for?” says Alon USA Energy's (ALJ) director of supply, trading and business development. "I’m not really sure what this means or what they expect from us."

Tesoro’s (TSO) VP of development, supply and logistics says he isn’t sure what new procedures were being mandated since the company already tests crude shipments.

Continental (CLR), the biggest producer of Bakken crude, praises the government’s effort to improve crude-by-rail safety.

More Bakken names: EOG, WLL, HES, KOG, OAS, NOG, EOX, MRO.

    Gee, what a surprise! Several catastrophic disasters with rail transport of crude! Of course with the Olympians of the White House and their minions crushing the new, incredibly expensive pipeline projects and trying to replace them with old, near-bankrupt railroads, what could we expect? Remember Amtrak?


    So now not only are Canadian and American pipeline corporations stuck with tens of billions on line, the railroads who took on more than they could handle are now headed for decades of litigation and bankruptcy! Good job!


    In my opinion the Greens and their peers and the jerks in politics who do their bidding, should be held financially responsible for the loss of billions of dollars and thousands of jobs! We all have the right to our opinions and to protest, but THINK THINGS THROUGH BEFORE PUTTING US ALL AT RISK!

    The crude has been tested, now what? Another government rule that nobody needs, wants or understands.


    Crude is flammable, the geniuses in DC have just figured this out? Too bad we cannot attach hoses to the mouths of congressmen and capture their hot air as a "green fuel." That is one energy source which would never run out.

    I read the order and could not ascertain what the government wants done and I am experienced at this. Shipments already are tested and classified under DOT Haz Materials Transport Regulations at 49 CFR Parts 171-180. The offeror or shipper has to attest and certify that the material is offered in compliance with HMR. I doubt this is anywhere near as big an issue as DOT is trying to make it.

    No pipeline. No rail. No oil. It is ENERGY! What is expected when it is compressed? BANG! Are we really willing to let these non-scientific Bureaucrats in Washington further reduce our future National welfare and growth? Come November I hope the people understand what they are doing to them, and I hope our media finally begins to understand their responsibility to tell us the truth about this issue.

    Obama found a way to stop the energy revolution and keep us dependent on his buddies in the Middle East. You have to give him credit if this stops shipments by rail because he already is stopping it by pipeline. 3 more years!
