Adobe offering $300M in free software for Obama education initiative

  • Adobe (ADBE -1.8%) is providing $300M worth of free software licenses for Pres. Obama's ConnectEd education technology initiative. The products include Photoshop Elements, Presenter (video creation), Captivate (interactive learning), and EchoSign (electronic signatures).
  • Aside from creating some good PR, the donation stands to increase the number of students and teachers comfortable using Adobe's software tools.

    It's great that Adobe is doing this! It's good for the students and for Adobe. Apple started in the '80s doing everything possible to make sure school teachers had Apple computers in their classroom to help with their administrative work and it has left generations of kids with positive impressions of Apple. More companies should be putting their products into the schools.
    But for the short term, I'm not sure that associating the effort with Obama is the smartest PR move there is. Even his fellow Democrats are avoiding him in their home districts.

    @allenstewart
    Using your logic, if Ted Cruz were president one would expect the Franklin Quill Pen company to be donating cases of their fine wares.

    @georgert,
    Sorry I did not see you reply sooner - my name is allan, not allen. Mom always told me that only liberals spelled it with an "e". :)
    I'll be looking into some of that Franklin Quill Pen stock in anticipation of Ted's election - thanks for the tip!

    Nothing is free.

    A bit too much "Hope & Change" going on here.

    If they're giving it away, they're expecting to get something else in return, from somewhere else.

    when ADBE says they are donating "free" software it's free to them too. The development costs have all been covered and there's only upside to have kids trained not their software.
