GT Advanced rallies; SA author upbeat about mobile solar cells

SA author Matt Margolis sees a major mobile opportunity for GT Advanced (GTAT +5%), one completely separate from its Apple sapphire supply deal.

Margolis argues a recent patent related to GT's Hyperion ion implanter (obtained via the Twin Creeks acquisition) suggests the company can develop triply-junction solar cells for electronic devices that carry 40%+ efficiency ratings.

He observes the triple-junction cells (per GT) will only be 2-25 microns thick. - by contrast, the iPhone 5S' home button is 170 microns thick - and that a partnership with France's Soitec to create systems that can manufacture substrates with multiple materials layers could help make the cells a reality.

I think it will be done once we
    discovery what the application
is for all this Apple sapphire.

    A solar powered I-device, possibly?

Mounted on gorilla glass. Why not? Bottom line is these guys sound really confident and happy. It's just the shorts that have anger issues at this point.

The partnership wih Soitec is a technology development agreement. No mention of how long the development cycle will take. New technology takes time to work all the bugs out. Just like what is currently going on at the GT / Apple Arizona plant.
A lot of variables when doing never before technology.
Good investment story, but the stock price has gotten way ahead of reality.

I am waiting to add more to my position because the price seems to be getting ahead of itself, but it just keeps climbing. Crazy. I thought on a down day due to Russia we could get back in around 12-13 but no luck today.

A big pull back may not happen any time soon. I suggest reading the 4Q report. GTAT will be doubling its revenue this year with a big ramp up in 2H. It's a huge growth story.
