Obama: U.S. eyeing steps to isolate Russia

Speaking to reporters ahead of a meeting with the Israeli PM, the President says Russia is in violation of international law and the U.S. is looking at economic and diplomatic steps to "isolate" the country.

EU foreign ministers are brandishing similar threats of sanctions of some sort.

One victim of the Ukraine turmoil: The Global X Social Media ETF (SOCL -2.7%), in part thanks to its 4.2% weighting of Russia's Yandex which is off 13% as Russia's stock dives.

To the extend of my mental capabilities I don't see how this whole play can actually put pressure on Yandex's (YNDX) real business model.

First: Yandex is an online business with almost zero hard assets, so war cannot actually hurt them.

Second: Their tax base and primary listing is outside Russia and denominated in USD

Third: The only way by which they will hurt their business is by somehow blocking their websites, but let's be serious...This cannot happen!

(If president) : I would not interfere too much into Russia's backyard.

I would ask them though (politely but decisively) not to proceed further into Ukrainian mainland, and that they should stop to Crimea and only there. Otherwise they would be confronted with a "casus beli" situation.

Then I would propose to them to make a strategic plan for the future of Ukraine, and find the way to help them:

    1. Establish a solid modern-type democracy and

    2. Help them with a financial pact in order to overcome the dangers of financial collapse, which seem imminent the following months.

Of course number 2 would and should include certain terms and conditions regarding the financial influence of certain powers (mainly US, EU, Russia and probably China) in Ukraine as a counter-balance to the financial help.
