Stephen Harper blasts Taseko's New Prosperity mine proposal

  • Canadian PM Harper ripped Taseko Mines (TGB +1.4%) and its New Prosperity project yesterday at the PDAC show in Toronto, saying last week's federal government environmental review rejecting the project was "damning."
  • Harper said New Prosperity "would not address the long-term destruction of [the local water system], and our experts said they could see no proposed plausible mitigation measures for that."
  • The potential for “significant adverse environmental effects” on local fish habitats and First Nations interests because of potential seepage from a tailings facility into Fish Lake formed the basis of the rejection.
