Stephen Harper blasts Taseko's New Prosperity mine proposal

Canadian PM Harper ripped Taseko Mines (TGB +1.4%) and its New Prosperity project yesterday at the PDAC show in Toronto, saying last week's federal government environmental review rejecting the project was "damning."

Harper said New Prosperity "would not address the long-term destruction of [the local water system], and our experts said they could see no proposed plausible mitigation measures for that."

The potential for “significant adverse environmental effects” on local fish habitats and First Nations interests because of potential seepage from a tailings facility into Fish Lake formed the basis of the rejection.

Yet, Harper continues to promote the filthiest fuel of all - bitumen tar sands.

Inexplicable. Maybe it works the same way in Canada that it does in the US, apparently the politicians didn't get paid enough to vote yes. The oil industry knows the drill, so to speak...
