Staples to fight Amazon by being Amazon

  • Shares of Staples (SPLS +1.2%) show some signs of life after last week's Q4 report from the retailer created a resounding sell-off.
  • Some investors are welcoming the increased focus by Staples on selling online. The company now offers more than 500K products off its website and isn't done broadening into new categories.
  • Staples nugget: Last year, only Amazon earned more revenue off of its website than Staples.

And as was noted on the call, this will be above 1.5 million SKU's by the end of 2014.

George Putnam of The Turnaround Letter has Staples as his pick of the month. That was before the Staples announcement of store closures. If he liked it at $13+ he must love it at $11.
By the way, he says buy it up to $18.
