Microsoft pins hopes on "Titanfall" to power Xbox One sales

  • Microsoft (MSFT) is carrying out a massive launch of hotly anticipated computer game "Titanfall" today, with the company hoping that the sci-fi combat title will boost sales of the Xbox One, which appears to be lagging behind Sony's (SNE) PlayStation 4.
  • The strategy is one that worked with "Halo," a sci-fi shooter game that was launched in 2001 and became a blockbuster that fueled sales of the Xbox.
  • Titanfall was developed by Respawn Entertainment and is being published by Electronic Arts (EA).

Console gaming is facing headwind created by mobile gaming, but console gaming is not becoming the underdog. The new generation consoles will prove their worthiness.

    Long SNE

Titanfall is a very fun game but xbox 1's problems are the issues it has on graphics/fps when compared to ps4.

You can only tell the difference on paper, a side by side comparison you can't really tell the difference.

Xbox has flubbed the launch a little bit and pulled a Wii U by not launching enough titles at max resolution.

Pinning its hopes on it? I doubt that, this author seems to forget that its a dead heat with Sony starting to pull ahead, however can we trust Sony to sustain the momentum? Sony is really hurting for cash flow, and PlayStation isn't a money maker. Of you are long SNE because of PlayStation please rethink your investing thesis.

I just traded in my old 360 and some games at gamestop got a pretty good deal considering I had to personally fix the optical drive on my 5 year old 360. all in all I got 145$ for my old stuff, and got the new xbox one, titanfall, and a 13 month xbox live gold sub for only $40 (typically $60 for 12 months).

As a gamer and investor I can say that this game is going to make a lot of noise. Look to the enhanced online abilities powered by Microsoft to really begin to show the differences between the systems.

The lack of a singleplayer campaign though I think is a mistake. There are many gamers, like myself, that aren't huge fans of multiplayer games.

I agree, I find as I get older I have less time for the multiplayer frustration...

One day I'll get Titanfall but my internet connection just ruins all online multiplayer experiences for me. I only use live to download DLC right now. I'll wait for some more games to come out and the first or second price cut to get an Xbox One.

"Xbox has flubbed the launch a little bit and pulled a Wii U by not launching enough titles at max resolution."

I hadn't thought to compare it to the Wii U before but that's actually the best way to describe it. I'm still not sure if I'm getting a PS4 instead because Sony has kicked the crap out of xbox in their conferences, plus I really want to play the Last of Us.

Overanalytical - you won't be able to play Last of Us if you get a ps4, it's not backward compatible (neither is the xbox1).

internet connectivity in the states is lagging the rest of the developed world... the fact that we still need a router and a modem in this day and age is psychotic to me...

how have we not figured out a one stop shop to just plugging in one device modem/router combo that lets all wireless devices connect to it with on simple encryption/password type deal is beyond me. I can't tell you how many routers/modems I've tossed simply because it took more effort to figure them out then was worth what i paid for the new one...

even to this day I can't log onto my router because the username/password are something I dont know and there is no easy way to reset them besides doing a factory reset (which I dont want to do because after tedious hours I finally got everything connected and I'm not sure how I did it).

There's been a lot of talk about Naughty Dog releasing it on PS4 (around July I think was the rumor). If they do it may push me to a decision.

Then again my 5 year old 360 still works like it should, and there are many games I haven't played yet (I'm just getting into the "Assassin's Creed games). So I've got time.

    Here's the story. http://bit.ly/1i9fDyr

It's still just rumor, but even if it doesn't work out the Last of Us will most likely be available through Playstation now

Well I hope it's true but I'm not going to hold my breath. I'm still sad that the rumor it was going to be released to the PC never came about. But on the optimistic side they did re-release the latest Tomb Raider to ps4 with juiced graphics so maybe you'll be correct.

Overanayltical- "Last of Us" is great, but the multiplayer is about stealth, and not so much about putting a lot of rounds down range. So if you're looking for a game that has that, LofUs is not it.

Btw, Battlefield 4 for PS3 has a huge amount of glitches, I took it back and got my money back.

Matthew Davis- Hopefully Sony will get their cash flow problem corrected. They make great products, especially when you synergistically tie them together.

TitanFall looks pretty bad @$$. I think that most games will eventually be multiplayer only, with more and more choices in how to play online, and across platforms (ie. Playstation vs Xbox). And what I mean by more choices is game styles such as "capture the flag, or hold the zone." Eventually, there will be bigger missions that tie players to a string of levels where the end result is based on your team throughout the levels.

Stealth games are my favorite genre (dishonored being my favorite so far) which is why I feel so left out since I can't play the last of us. I always get the latest loud shooter just because (Call of Duty, Halo, etc). Then again, Titanfall is supposed to change the way we look at FPS games so we'll see.
