SEC, Dutch authorities investigating VimpelCom

The SEC is "conducting an investigation related to VimpelCom (VIP -1.9%) and requesting documents." (PR)

In addition, Dutch authorities have paid a visit to the carrier's Amsterdam office. They "obtained documents and informed the Company that it was the focus of a criminal investigation in the Netherlands."

Both investigations are tied to VimpelCom's Uzbek operations. They follow a investigation by Swedish prosecutors related to fellow carrier TeliaSonera's Uzbek ops, and a 2012 disclosure by VimpelCom that it could be investigated over its relationship with former Uzbek partner Takliant Ltd.

The investigations also come at a time when tensions between the U.S. and Russia are running high over Russia's actions in Ukraine.
