Report: Target fiddled while the breach burned

Execs with Target (TGT) were warned about the breach of customer credit card information but sat on their hands, according to a Bloomberg Businessweek report.

The retailer's management in Minneapolis was warned after FireEye's malware detection software detected a breach and before the critical data was offloaded from Target's servers. Ultimately, as many as 40M credit card numbers and account information on 70M customers ended up flowing out of Target while the FireEye malware warning was slowly analyzed.

Bloomberg Businessweek interviewed over 10 Target employees inside the company's data security operations in determining the crucial timing.
