Department store sales in focus

Department store sales outpaced overall retail sales in February with a 0.7% M/M gain.

A pickup in traffic during the last half of the month helped sales, but the category showed a 4.8% Y/Y drop in an indication of just how far mall traffic has dropped off.

4.8 per cent drop year over year means our economy isn't doing as well as the government is trying to let on to us. Almost 5 per cent staying home, broke from higher living costs and part time wages.

I would attribute much of the mall traffic drop to online inroads that have been making headway for a few years now.

Good point, particularly in light of gas prices in the $3.50 range. Higher gas prices mean fewer trips to the mall and more reliance on Internet shopping.
