Battle for home good pits J.C. Penney against Bed Bath & Beyond

Shares of J.C. Penney (JCP +0.1%) have been on the rise over the last month with the retailer's re-launch of its home goods business providing investors something to bite off on.

Credit Suisse notes that what's good for JCP, could come at the expense of Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY).

Bed Bath & Beyond went to 9.3% share of the home goods market during the grand Ron Johnson experiment, but could see its sales slip as JCP gets back on track with consumers.

When J C Penny acquires Sears 'Land's End' line and does right by both brands, I'll invest in JCP. Home goods at Penny's doesn't thrill me. Sears? Home goods and major appliances are a better fit than Land's End.

Wow JCP has gone from their death bed to a major competitor of BBB in a few months. Imagine what they could be in a year or two.

I still have strong feelings that activist investor Ackman and his evil lackey Johnson had the hidden agenda of driving JCP into the ground and profiting from it's breakup in a cleverly thought out scheme (typical American conspiracy theory maybe?)
JCP board members were so totally snowed on Ackman, believing he was pooping out golden eggs just for them, so I understand their position.
My typical American conspiracy theory is not based on fancy boy charts and graphs but on just one fact could anyone be so stupid as to do what Ackman/Johnson did?
Of course there is not a shred of evidence left by the clever conspirators, however it would make a damn fine Hollywood movie, even if my typical American conspiracy theory is totally bogus!

Spacely, from what I read it appears they believed it would work. Why some brands were showcased is not clear. Have you seen the furniture on clearance now at Regardless of price, who was the target market for those styles?

I checked goods in JCP in Home Dept, and they really have nice things that can give competition to BedBath&Beyond, and presentation way better than in Sears.

New Home products in JCP were awesome enough. I personally think their items are much better than Bed Bath & Beyond and Sears.
