Putin moves towards annexing Crimea

  • Vladimir Putin has authorized a draft treaty for Crimea to join Russia and has formally notified his country's parliament of the Ukrainian province's request in that regard.
  • The actions follow Putin signing a decree yesterday that recognizes Crimea's independence, which has allowed negotiations on annexation to start.
  • Putin is due to address parliament later today.
  • The move also comes despite the U.S. and EU yesterday imposing sanctions on leading Russian officials.
  • More on Crimea.

So I guess the markets figure all is well then, unless he invades the rest of Ukraine next? Then will the markets care? Probably.

During the early parts of WWII in Europe the Dow had field days even when dire news came from Europe. Markets tend to be slow to act and fast to over-react.

Only 25% of Americans want to give military aid to the Ukraine....

"All demographic groups support economic sanctions except the youngest Americans. More than six in 10 older Americans support sanctions, but 55% of Americans under the age of 35 oppose them," said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "It's possible that generation gap is due to older Americans' memories of the Soviet Union as the chief threat to the U.S.; many younger Americans may have no memory at all of the Cold War and most of those under the age of 25 were not even born when the Soviet Union collapsed."

Look at this realistically. The Crimeans are certainly Russians. They never were Ukranian. The organization into Ukraine is a holdover from the old Soviet Union days. Does anyone really doubt that that Crimeans overwhelmingly identify themselves as Russians? The entire thing is silliness. Let them join Russia. It isn't like an invasion of Ukraine - and painting it that way simply denies the historical and cultural context or Crimea.
