Having no job is awful, but one can at least qualify for and receive government help.
My friend was able to find a part-time job @ $8/hour, but she cannot even afford to pay for heat or to have her car fixed. She went to Social Services to apply for
help, and they told her she MAKES TOO MUCH MONEY TO QUALIFY FOR AID. She is being evicted in the very near future. My point is the suffering and need are not confined to the unemployed standing in food stamp lines. Poverty is less black and white than "employed" vs "unemployed" or "Jobless claims up 5K." Poverty is multi-layered and defies simple categorization. Poverty as an economic and social problem which stubbornly and consistently defies cliches we devise to assuage our fleeting and sporadic visitations of conscience and outrage.
