Eastern Air Lines is back

The new Eastern Air Lines is looking for 10 jets as an ownership group that holds Eastern's intellectual property looks to revive a brand name that's been defunct for over 20 years.

Looking back: The original carrier traces its roots back to the 1920s and one of its founders was U.S. World War I fighter ace Eddie Rickenbacker.

Looking ahead: The odds aren't in the favor of an Eastern resurrection. Spirit Airlines (SAVE) and Virgin America have been the exception not the rule over the last few decades with airliner startups.

Good luck! People Express and California Pacific have exhausted a bunch of cash waiting for Part 121 approval. The Eastern brand was ok, but nothing special in today's market that has strong brands and loyal customers following. What about a strategy? Are they going to be a "me too" airline, or come up with a new strategy? As for Virgin America, it is too early to declare success on an airline that has virtually stopped getting new planes to preserve cash.
