Tesla Motors roundup: UBS caution, Ohio deal, and Model X buzz

UBS shifts to Neutral on Tesla Motors (TSLA -1.4%) on its view that momentum has played out and fundamentals will settle in. The investment firm has a price target of $230 on the EV automaker.

The Ohio Automobile Dealers Association has worked out a deal with Tesla that will see the company be allowed to operate three stores in the state without a hassle from the group.

Over 12K Tesla Model X reservations have been made with deposits, according to watchers of Tesla Motors Club's website. Though Tesla order tracking is more an art than a science, the indication is that the Model X is generating plenty of buzz.

While I am bullish on the X reservations, myself. I want to ensure that people don't get too exuberant with the data presented there.

Any cancellations would not be shown in that number, so while the present number is sitting at over 13k, I would say a solid number of those could be "cancellations" when people upgrade/downgrade to/from signature cars. You would also have people that have openly canceled because they either got turned off of the car (for whatever reason), just feel like waiting until it has been out for a while (some owners got a couple bad eggs on early S deliveries and this has created some caution on the early adopter sentiment), or possibly their financial situation changed, just to name a few known scenarios to have played out.

Again, I still feel that based on the rate of new reservations that it is still strong, and will be a solid number of cars when we get to full production next year, but as the note says, this is very much an "art" of deduction, and don't want people going over board like happened with the VIN counting for Q3.

yeah the early adopter momentum could be leveling, but i think mass market momentum will in time replace it.
And yeah, the stock might decline slightly till another catalyst comes, likely china sales numbers, gigafactory ground breaking or X sales and deliveries.

I don't know what a "solid number" is. Is that anything like a real number? Prospective customers should probably be enumerated using natural numbers or integers.

I would expect most of the people who have ordered a car to follow through and buy it. They can always resell it later if it stretches their finances too much. I'm not into VIN counting, that seems like foolish fuel for speculation. But the company itself is saying that they are seeing lots of interest in the Model X even though they aren't yet trying to sell it.

They tracked 12k in reservation for the MX although their tracking system is more of an art, the paragraph says.

If I see birds covering the sky into darkness, I would also say the say the same thing. I'd say perhaps 12K birds but my estimating is more of an art than science. Wow, if the final count may come between 10K-20K.....that's bad.

Please forward the Ohio Auto Dealer's positive decision to the New Jerseyjerks Dealer's Assoc. so they can see how America is supposed to work.

Reservations for Model X say the story. Model X will capture a big chunk of the Crossover market. And with more supercharging stations, people will feel more comfortable traveling on vacation in a Model X.
