Report: Dish Network pushing for merger talks with DirecTV

Dish Network (DISH +6%) CEO Charlie Ergen has approached DirecTV (DTV +6.2%) about a merger, reports Bloomberg.

Ergen has been vocal in the past on the need for the two companies to merge, while DirecTV CEO Mike White has played it cool on the subject.

A ramp-up of talk on a DISH-DTV combination could catch the ears of regulators looking at the proposed merger between Comcast (CMCSA +1%) and Time Warner Cable (TWC +0.4%).

Today's letter of the day is "A" as in aardvark, anagram, and antitrust.

Pay TV has been loosing subscribers. So why not merge before rate hikes start now that their are
It would free up a whole constellation of Satellites either Dish or Direct.
These birds could then be retasked to serve as space based Internet service to feed rural areas where there is no wired - wireless high speed service (well over half the area of the US )
All set top boxes mfg. since the last merger attempt well over a decade ago are supposed to be compatible with both Dish & Direct conditional access systems so few box swap outs would be needed.
    GO FOR IT !!!

Maybe, but the government's antitrust enforcement has been uneven for decades. In other news, for DTV longs, have a look at Farhad Manjoo's (he is the tech successor to David Pogue at the Times) column today in the NYT as to why cord cutting is unsatisfying. While I don't think that is much of a threat in Latin America, it is helpful (for those of us who don't find streaming services to be all that much)to know that the cutters may not multiply beyond the numbers we have been seeing.

I really hope this doesn't happen.

Dish Network is notorious for horrible customer AND employee satisfaction.

Almost everyone I know who has DirecTV is extremely happy.

I have to agree, if a merger between the two were to happen, I'd expect service to drop even worse. DTV has been great to work with and Dish was just plain a pain.
