Vodafone outlines £1B U.K. spending plan

Vodafone's (VOD) U.K. division intends to spend £1B ($1.66B) on networks and services this year, and create 1,400 jobs by opening 150 new stores. That would take Vodafone's total branded outlets in the country to over 500.

The plan comes as Vodafone strengthens and expands its European operations following the sale of its 45% in Verizon Wireless for $130B. The strategy includes the acquisition of Spanish cable operator Ono for €7.2B ($10B).

    "...lumbering oaf $T."

A close examination of forward numbers shows T able to sustain FCF better than VOD in the next 12- 18 months +.

To me, both are sound long term investments, both have growth risks - T with a very mature market in search of the next big thing with a cellphone emphasis, VOD looking to shore up a weak and slower growth infrastructure in southern Europe and today retail outlet expansion in the uber competitive U.K. market where VOD is number 3 in its own home ballpark.

I'm long on both, but remain unsure if VOD is really a $36 + issue going forward and therefore hesitant to commit more funds presently. At $35, T is not a buy, maybe fairly valued, but not a buy. Accumulated on recent pullback...but VOD...uncertain.

Don't mind me, I like taking pot shots at $T any chance I get. As for your uncertainty as to whether or not $VOD is really a $36 issue ... well, a massive insider buying spree at that price tells me the braintrust has an abundance of confidence $VOD moves much higher in the year to come. Much to the dismay to those at $T hoping for cheapies in a take-over bid.
