3D Systems/Stratasys partner and rival Materialise files for IPO

  • Materialise (MTLS), a Belgian provider of 3D printing software and manufacturing services, has filed for a $125M IPO. No symbol has been given yet. The underwriters: Piper, Credit Suisse, BB&T Capital, Janney, Stephens, and KBC Securities.
  • Materialise's software handles data preparation/process planning for 3D printing projects, thereby interacting with both CAD software from the likes of Autodesk, and 3D printers from the likes of 3D Systems, ExOne, and Stratasys. Ford, Boeing, Airbus, and Toyota are among its 8K+ licensees.
  • The company uses 98 3D printers to provide rapid prototyping/additive manufacturing services. It also makes custom parts for automakers, and provides 3D medical imaging software and related clinical services.
  • The company has a complicated relationship with 3D Systems (DDD -2%) and Stratasys (SSYS +2.5%): Both 3D and Stratasys are among Materialise's software licensees, but they also compete with its services arm - Stratasys just bought two services firms - and are moving aggressively to expand their own software lineups. There has been speculation 3D might try to buy Materialise.
  • Materialise had 2013 revenue of $94.7M (+16% Y/Y), net income of $4.7M, and a gross margin of 60.5%.

Addition, not competition. The more the merrier. And the faster 3DP will penetrate the markets and grow.

It is more than bewildering that Materialise NV is posited as competitor. In case the author did not notice: Materialise NV is a service bureau. 3D Systems and Stratasys produce additive fabrication equipment.

Apart from that, it is my go-to service bureau for demanding jobs.

3D and Stratasys own service bureaus to complement their printer businesses. Stratasys is set to buy two private bureaus (one of them for $295M), and 3D has bought a few of them over the last couple of years.

Still, Materialise is no competitor in the realm of equipment, which is the core business that has bubble stock cheerleaders wax lyrical about a future in which physics and chemistry no longer apply.

I hope Materialise can steer away from 3D systems, which to me is a hodge-podge of haphazardly amalgamated businesses. The old British proverb "Jack of all trades and master of none" has never rung more true in my view.

Neither Materialise nor SLM are (new) competition. These are not new start-ups or new market entrants, they're old existing companies that are just going public. Not competiton, or not NEW competition, just addition to the 3DP stocks. And the more the better, will raise awareness, penetration and acceptance. HPQ would be a new entrant, but again, this market segment is so unpopulated, it's going to take years until we start having head-to-head competition. The market (the demand) will grow more than the supply, so there'll be plenty of room for growth for everybody, for quite some time.

To counter with a proverb too: "Don't put all your eggs in one basket". Diversification is good. Happy Easter ;-)
