Airbus drops behind Boeing in Q1 jet orders

Airbus (EADSF, EADSY) dropped behind U.S. rival Boeing (BA) in the race for new airplane deals in Q1 after a pair of wide-body order cancellations, while Boeing finalized a major Canadian sale.

Airbus said it won new 40 orders in March, as China lifted a block on 27 orders for A330 jets but Italy and Philippines airline canceled orders for 17 aircraft; it ended the quarter with 158 new orders, or 103 net orders after adjusting for cancellations.

Boeing leapfrogged its rival in gross orders after winning an order for 61 narrow-body jets from Air Canada which was first announced in December but finalized this week; it won 275 gross orders, or 234 net orders, in the quarter.
