DigitalGlobe sells off following Google-Skybox report

  • DigitalGlobe (DGI -4.9%) is within striking distance of its 52-week low ($26.48) following a report stating Google is in early talks to buy satellite imagery startup Skybox Imaging. Google Maps and Earth currently depend heavily on DigitalGlobe's high-res imagery.
  • Skybox asserts its imagery solution is superior to alternatives thanks to its use of proprietary telescopes, advanced cameras/image sensors, and superior pixel-processing. The company also boasts its satellites are 20x smaller than conventional alternatives.

What a joke! Skybox or whatever has resolutions they say are "BELOW 1 METER!"
That's 100cm for you investors who can't add. Digital Globes existing satellites have delivered 50cm by far the best in the business. There is no comparison between the two entities! It would be like comparing the Hubble to your backyard telescope! THEY ARE FOR DIFFERENT PURPOSES AND ALWAYS WILL BE.

DGI has a complete satellite ready to launch in a few weeks. It is worth about 2 billion to start. This will bring their commercial resolution, military is classified, down to 30cm. They have a second satellite of the same incredible quality of 30cm which will be launched when tailored to specific military and commercial needs and international demand. It is the project of several years work and again is worth billions.

By shorting the only corporation in its class money-grubbers have slowed down critical progress for this sterling corporation and the Defense Department. You all know what delays mean to your taxes right????????????We all saw how critical the technology is in the search for the 777. Look at the various satellites and you'll see the difference.

As I am an investor in DGI I don't appreciate losing almost a third of my stock value on a bunch of short crap! Their CFO was fired the next day after the faulty report neglected to illustrate the value of two best in the world satellites complete and ready to go! Billions invested for several times the short term return. That is they type of company I invest in and so does your military. Who the hell do you think provides the intel to keep you and your family safe?

An interesting rant, but your comment about the CFO being fired is incorrect. It was the former Controller and Chief Accounting Officer (CAO), Susan M. Fox, who was replaced (see Form 8-K filed, 3/3/14).

    Remember, facts do matter.

Skybox's microsats are a far different animal than DGI's imaging birds, and can be used for quite a number of useful missions without having the higher resolution of DG's 'WorldView' constellation. It should be no surprise to anybody familiar with the geospatial information industry that DG would be interested in an acquisition of Skybox -- the two different platforms are highly complementary.
