Data shines light on Medicare payments


Medicare paid almost 4,000 doctors and medical professionals over $1M in 2012, data from $77B worth of payments shows.

Seven professionals received over $10M.

Ophthalmologists and radiation oncologists were among those who received the highest amounts, although they also have high costs.

A number of entities with Quest Diagnostics (DGX) in their names received a combined $669M, while those with LabCorp (LH) were paid $717M.

The disclosure of the payments represents the first time in 33 years that such information has been released.
