3D Systems expands Canon deal, recovers some of yesterday's losses

3D Systems' (DDD +2.1%) Japanese reseller deal with Canon, which already covers most of the company's professional 3D printers, has been expanded to include 3D's entire ProJet professional printer line, its CubeX consumer/enthusiast-focused desktop printers and its Geomagic 3D object design/scanning software.

Shares are trading higher after falling over 10% yesterday in a brutal momentum stock rout. Peer Voxeljet isn't so lucky.

Please notice that Voxeljet and Exone are really not peers to DDD or Stratasys although they could be in the future. Their clients and markets are different and also their tehnology. Do not compare apples and oranges. DDD and Arcam could be considered competitors but only for certain clients since their technologies are quite different.
I have mentioned before that additive manufacturing is not really a new technology. Pottery makers used it already during the stoneage. What is new is that you use computers, robot machines and melting technique for doing the adding. The technology has been very muched hyped by economical analysts who do not seem to know much about manufacturing and believe that the technology will move back simple jobs from China to the USA and Europe which is of course not true. If the 3D-printer for plastic becomes a consumer product that will be used in private homes and sold in large numbers (which I don't believe. May be a shop in the neighbourhood will have one one one or two or a lokal cake bakery) they will probbaly be manufactured in China or some other country in East Asia just like ordinary printers for printing on paper. However printers working with metal is another story. Their application is manufacturing of unique pieces and small series of pieces and manufacturing in very advanced metal alloys for instance for very high temperature applications.
