Ukraine retakes airport

Ukraine retook an airfield in the eastern Donetsk region yesterday after fighting with pro-Russian militias.

Ukrainian forces have also apparently surrounded the town of Slaviansk, which had been seized by the militias. In total, the separatists have taken over government and police buildings in up to 10 towns and cities in eastern Ukraine.

Ukraine's action has prompted Vladimir Putin to describe the country as being on the "brink of civil war;" it has also come ahead of talks tomorrow between senior diplomats from Russia, the EU, the U.S. and Ukraine.

Russia's Micex is -0.1%, while the USD-RUB is -0.4% at 36.095.

It was so predictable that Ukraine would be heading for a Civil War, as soon as fascist terrorists seized control of the Ukrainian government by force.

And so few Americans know anything about the history or rivalry of the Russians and Ukrainians competing for control here. They just get the message the Putin is bad, and go on to watching their sports reports. They know nothing about the way the Ukrainians blame Russians for sufferings in the 1920s and 1930s, or how Russians blame Ukrainians for supporting the Nazi Germans during World War II.

The borders of the current nation of Ukraine (established 1991) were a grievous mistake, and throughout the subsequent 23 years there has been trouble between Ukrainians and the millions of Russians who were unwisely included within their eastern regions.

Indeed, the notion of "what is Ukraine vs what is Russia" is incredibly complex and the loyalties are even moreso, going back over 1000 years.

This morning, I watched a live report on CNN where a Ukrainian tank pulled into an eastern city, the soldiers climbed out and calmly handed it over to a pro-Russia group, without incident and to much cheering.

If we thought "who exactly would we arm" was complex in Syria, it's even more baffling in Ukraine.

Yep - elements of the vaunted 25th Ukrainian Airborne Brigade have also switched sides. I'm guessing the Ukrainians who tend to serve in the professional military tend to be of Russian descent, while those of Ukrainian descent serve the bureaucracy. I don't really know that, but just speculating.

You cannot make a country out of people who do not want to live together. Maybe our government should think about that before they set policy.

    Civil War or invasion?
If the men in green suits turn out to not be citizens of Ukraine and they are not in the uniforms of their country, then they are spies and can hang.

There may be thousands there who lack insignia on their outfits.

Hang them? You and whose army?

Let the US stay out of this. No money or troops for anyone. I personally don't care what happens to Ukraine, one way or the other.

Russia is already a corrupt, failed state that will do itself in without anyone else's help. If they want to waste all of their money and international goodwill invading someone else, let them do it.
