Auto China roundup: Toyota aims to more than double sales in China

Toyota (TM) aims to more than double it sales in China to 2M a year from 917,000 in 2013 and introduce 15 models in the country by the end of 2017. From 2015, the Japanese company intends to produce and sell hybrid versions of its Corolla and Levin cars in China. Toyota unveiled its plans at the Auto China show in Beijing, which has officially kicked off this weekend.

Ford (F) is unveiling a prototype of the Ford Everest, a seven-seater off-road SUV that will be made by the company's JMC joint venture with Jiangling Motors. At the moment, Ford makes its SUVs with Chongqing Changan Automobile.

Fiat Chrysler (FIATY) plans to start producing three new Jeeps in China with partner Guangzhou Automobile Group from late 2015 via the companies' GAC Fiat JV, which intends to invest 4.7B yuan ($755.8M) in a project in Guangzhou. The plans have received government approval. GAC Fiat could even make a vehicle customized for the Chinese market.

GM is on course for "a good month" in the U.S., the head of its North American operations, Alan Batey, has said. GM increased sales in March despite the bad publicity the company suffered because of the ignition-switch defect. GM is launching a new Chevrolet Trax and a redesigned Chevrolet Cruze compact car at Auto China. Batey reckons GM isn't "too far away" from selling 1M Chevrolet vehicles in China after selling 650,000 in 2013.

It might be added that Ford sold 935,813 automobiles in China in 2013, up 49% from 2012; and in the first quarter of 2014 sales were 271,321 - up another 45% from 1Q13. And Ford plans to introduce 15 new vehicles in China by 2015.

Growth is not the issue, how much growth is.Communist party has stated its line in the sand is 7.5%, nothing less. Rest is a leverage issue as we saw here in 08.

Meanwhile, NASA physicist Henning Leidecker is now speaking out regarding the increased risk of unintended acceleration due to "tin whiskers" growing in the electronic throttle control of '02-'06 Camrys, comparing it to a game of Russian roulette. Toyota redesigned the pedal sensors in '07 and '08 for the express purpose of eliminating the tin whisker risk. Instead of Toyota, the Justice Department, and NHTSA trying to keep the electronics issue quiet, a recall should be issued to update the sensors in the models Dr. Leidecker has noted. I've been blogging about the Recall King for quite some time - search "Beware of Toyota. Their next victim may be YOU..."

Well, if Toyota's vehicles have Tin Whisker crystals growing in their throttle controller hardware, and they are the cause of unintended accelerations (which NASA, NHTSA, and Toyota ruled out based on the science and careful examination), the other automakers do as well, since the hardware is essentially similar. Of course, conspiracy theorists and fame-seekers can say anything they want under provisions of free speech, without having to be accountable. If Toyota had engaged in a massive conspiracy with NASA and NHTSA to hide their Whiskers and the effect on engine operations, then the press would have loved to help expose it. Apparently they didn't. NASA specifically determined that the tin whiskers that were noted in the Camry could not have produced unintended accelerations as reported. And this is all dated from 2011 - including Leidecker's participation in the studies.

Just because a theory or hypothesis is aired, and is later discarded, does not mean there is a grand conspiracy underway to hide the truth. It is the duty of investigators to come up with all possible causes, even the Easter Bunny getting his whiskers stuck in the accelerator pedal hinge, if it is feasible. Ruling it out because the mythological Easter Bunny does not actually exist, except in stuffed doll form or chocolates, does not mean that there is a conspiracy underfoot to undermine the Easter Bunny as a fun holiday story.
