Early forecast for April U.S. auto sales

A forecast from J.D. Power and LMC Automotive calls for automobile sales in the U.S. to reach 1.1M units in April, up 5% Y/Y.

The average transaction price in April is expected to be 3.6% higher at close to $29.8K.

What to watch: Close to half of the new models in 2014 are arriving in the premium segment which will cause new competition as some premium pricing dips down into the levels of non-premium models.

Most interestingly, what will be the impact, if any, of the waxing scandal enshrouding General Motors on GM sales, by dollar and by volume, for the entire month of April? Has General Motors Management been compelled to jack-up incentives and slash prices to clear cars and trucks off of cluttered lots?

It has not even been a month since GM Chieftess, Mary Barra, perspired and prevaricated before the cameras on Capitol Hill in front of Congress and tens of millions of Americans.

Funfun--The impact on GM sales? Not much, as the public has come to accept recalls and subsequent government investigations followed by lawsuits and financial penalties as a way of life. This of course is all driven by the fact that 1) the public is in a mad rush to buy whatever is new, which 2) pressures all of the manufacturers to place new or refreshed vehicles on the market as quickly as possible, irrespective of quality or safety risks. Nissan for example is having a nice increase in sales due to all of the new or refreshed models it introduced in the last six months. Ford can expect the same next year as it introduces 16 new or refreshed models in North America this year (its most ever in one year). The public seems to want all of the latest technologies/options not knowing that quality and safety risks are always the greatest during the first year of market introduction. They must feel very comfortable with the warranties.

Some of us are more wary than others about all the new technology. I'm glad that my 1996 Chevy van does not spy on me and send my location information to some Big Brother In The Sky every minute or so.

I can't wait for the day that some police planning group insists that all new cars should come with a printer that will automatically print you out a ticket every time you fail to buckle your seatbelt or exceed the speed limit or run a red light.

Car sales keep increasing due to low interest rates and as a result of people keeping their vehicles longer during the housing crisis. Prices keep increasing as more and more technology options become standardized. My thought is that we will see sales increase through the summer with the market tailing off in late fall.

Of course, watch $FIATY have another great quarter for Jeep sales...

Amid all the fluff + puff GM stock continues its descent.
Now, exactly when will that end?
    The stock
    Will sock
    For measure
    For airbags failing
    For management fibbing.

McKay: New Saturn? The last year Saturn were made was 2010. So it's like middle age at the least.

Mike - you believe Ford shares are going to jump 25% after they release a quarterly earnings report that is expected to show their profits are down 25% from a year ago?

    Well, good luck!
